New Delhi: According to officials on Thursday, the CBI conducted searches at 80 locations across 16 states in connection with more than 200 digital arrest scam cases in which the accused allegedly used a fake Supreme Court website to deceive people.

The operation, which began earlier this week, involved around 60 teams from the agency conducting raids at 80 locations across the country. Two accused, identified as B Naresh from Chennai and Sanjib Saha from Kolkata, were arrested at the conclusion of the operation, officials added.

The arrested suspects were allegedly involved in the incorporation of shell companies and the opening and operation of mule bank accounts.

"These accounts were reportedly used for laundering approximately Rs 2 crore of suspected proceeds of crime," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

The action followed an FIR registered by the CBI on the basis of a complaint from the Supreme Court registry, alleging that fraudsters were deceiving victims under the guise of digital arrest by using a URL similar to the official Supreme Court website.

"The CBI recently unearthed a fraudulent website bearing a URL deceptively similar to the official website of the Supreme Court of India. The fraudsters allegedly used this fraudulently registered domain to deceive victims under the guise of digital arrest. Based on a complaint received from the Registry of the Supreme Court of India, the CBI registered an FIR and commenced an investigation into the matter," the spokesperson said.
